Riots and violence cause deaths and destruction in Mumbai city but the Chief Minister Balraj Chauhan (Amrish Puri) because of some political motive, does not take any preventive step. TV reporter Shivaji Rao (Anil Kapoor) in a telly interview of Chauhan publicly brings to light the CM's disregard towards the elimination of the recent violence and his total failure as a CM working for the growth and development of the state. Chauhan, just to stick up for his political image, says to Rao snapping his fingers, "Sirf ek din... sirf ek din ke liye CM bannke dikhaao", (Become the CM just for a day), something that later became a popular and theoretical political concept in India where edification in political and social arena is a crying need. Rao accepts Chauhan's challenge and emerges as an efficient CM wiping out various socio-economic problems of the state and dismissing the corrupt government employees. Rao's beloved is played by Rani Mukherjee.

Nageshwar alias "Don" heads a vast criminal empire. He has an only son, (Ajay Devgn), who is completely familiar with his dad and his business. So is Ajay's wife, who would like to put an end to all these criminal activities. When Nageshwar starts showing signs of ageing, he decides that it is now time for Ajay to take over from him. Following the events in Nagina, Nigahen is the story of Neelam, the daughter of Rajiv and Rajni. After the tragic car accident of her parents, Neelam is raised by her grandfather in the city and is finally brought back to her ancestral home in the country, as a young adult (who bears a striking resemblance to her mother, also played by Sridevi). There, she encounters and falls in love with Anand who as a child was kidnapped by Gorakh Nath, a powerful Tantrik. Claiming to have amnesia of the events, Anand woos Neelam and she falls in love with him. Little does Neelam know that Anand does not have amnesia and is working for Gorakh Nath: the Tantrik has set his eyes on a powerful gem (Mani), which grants the one who possesses it great powers. The only person who knows its whereabouts is Neelam, who unbeknown to her, was hypnotized by her late mother's Guardian Snakes into going to the old temple from the original story, and locating the gem (an event witnessed by Gorakh Nath).
