A gang led by Aliyar (Thilakan) holds a grudge against Police Officer Haridas (Vishnuvardhan) who was responsible for the death of Antony's (Mammootty) wife and daughter as well as Aliyar's Wife and two daughters 12 years ago and sent Antony to jail. When Antony is finally freed, he reunites with his old gang and they plan to kill Haridas. Antony then discovers that his daughter who he thought had died is actually still alive and was raised by Haridas as one of his daughters. Antony meets his long-lost daughter but Aliyar and gang are not ready to leave Haridas. Antony pleads to the gang to leave Haridas alone but fails to stop them. During the struggle, Antony gets shot by Aliyar and in his defence kills Aliyar.

The movie begins with an older man's dream; Unni (played by Mohanlal) is roused from his house and told to come in haste to see his father (someone Unni has longed believed to be dead). He is greeted by a crowd of people who begin to make fun of him and Unni wakes up. An astrologer interprets the dream as a harbinger of Easwara Pillai's (Unni's father) death and advices Unni do the last rites for his "dead" father. During the rituals, Unni comes to find it difficult to go through with the rituals as he then believe that his father is alive; he walks away declaring that his father is not dead.

The film opens with a high tech person's (Kamal Hasan) attempt to kill Chief Minister Madhava Menon (Thilakan), but due to circumstances, he fail in his attempt. Pappu (Sreejith Vijay) stays in his mother's house after completing high school, awaiting results. During his stay, he falls in love with Rathi (Shweta Menon), a woman elder to him. The boy is very deeply in love with Rathi and shows his love in different ways. He keeps visiting the snake temple to see Rathi. There are many scenes in which Pappu expresses his love. Rathi initially thinks of Pappu as her younger brother but, after some time, she realizes his love. After some problems, the two families know about the love issue. Deserted by his mother, teenaged Raju is adopted by Beeranikka, a Muslim ferryman. Raju soon starts accompanying Beeranikka in ferrying people. One day, he meets a young girl who is returning to her native town Kozhikode after the death of her mother. The girl invites Raju to Kozhikode where she would be staying with her father and uncle. Not interested in leaving the ferrying job, Raju rejects the invitation. A few days later, he finds himself in possession of an ornament which he thinks belongs to the girl. He travels to Kozhikode to return the ornament and finds the girl after many days of search. The girl does not recognise Raju and says the ornament does not belong to her. Disheartened, Raju returns to the ferry.
