Avinash, an M.A. student, is an idealistic young man with socialist views and stern principles. He is not affected by materialistic nature of his generation and strongly opposes acquiring wealth, more than needed. He is son of a wealthy landlord but has left his father's house because of philosophical differences. He works as a part time writer to meet his daily living. He finds an admirer in Geeta, his classmate and daughter of a textile mill owner, who falls in love with him for his outlook. Geeta also leaves her father's house and get married and soon to have a child. Avinash finds it difficult to manage this extended family. Financial insecurity forces him to join a publishing house owned by his classmate Satish Shah. Soon he starts transforming into a ruthless businessman and treads the very path, once he loathed. Geeta is surprised of his easy withdrawal of principles. She decides to leave him. Avinash realizes his mistake, leaves his job and joins his ex-professor Choudhary's publishing house.

Rahul is angry with his dad for marrying a second time, while his first wife is still alive; Anu ran away from an oppressive girls' hostel run by Arnie Campbell (Tom Alter). They meet and fall in love. Rahul helps Anu in becoming independent and seeking a job. Anu is approached by a talent agent to be a model, an offer which she accepts. Rahul wants to marry Anu but he first must establish himself as a singer-which he does, however; being under the impression that Anu helped him with his career, his ego is hurt. This causes him to harbour a growing resentment toward her. Anu then decides to further her career when Director Padam Singh persuades her to accompany him to Paris. When Rahul comes to stop her from boarding the flight, Anu decides to stay behind to renew their relationship.

Vijay Agnihotri (Shah Rukh Khan) comes from a wealthy family and is very spoiled as well as psychopathic. He meets Shivani (Madhuri Dixit) in a disco club. He tries to get friendly but without any success. Later he meets Shivani in an airplane who is a flight attendant with whom he instantly falls in love but she shows no interest in him – this does not stop Vijay and he continues to pursue her, only to be rejected every time. Vijay informs his mother that he intends to marry Shivani. When they approach Shivani’s family with a proposal, they witness that Shivani had married another man named Ashok. Vijay is now heartbroken. Shivani and Ashok decide to move to America.

Three heavenly angels, Om, Namah, & Shiva, respectfully request God to grant them a period of a week so that they can get an example of love, sacrifice, compassion, and kindness, in order to enable God to reconsider his instructions, to which God agrees, and permits the three angels to visit Earth, on the condition that they will not be visible to any humans, nor will they use their heavenly powers to assist any human in any manner whatsoever. The question remains, that in this Kal Yug (Dark Age) will the angels ever come across a compassionate, and loving human being, who is capable of sacrifice, in such short period of time?
