The film was the fourth collaboration between Dassin and Mercouri, who took the title role. Greek writer Margarita Lymberaki adapted Euripides' Hippolytus into a melodrama concerning the rich society of ship owners and their families, but still containing some of the tragic elements of the ancient drama. The film is set in Paris and London, and especially on the Greek island of Hydra.
Synopsis
Phaedra, second wife of shipping tycoon Thanos (Raf Vallone), falls in love with her husband's son from his first marriage, Alexis (Anthony Perkins). The love is doomed from the very beginning but they are unable to control their feelings.Actors

Une célèbre actrice grecque, Maya (Mélina Mercouri), après avoir passé de nombreuses années à l'étranger, rentre en Grèce pour y jouer Médée. Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) visits Istanbul, where she sees a traveling fair featuring replicas of treasures from the Topkapı Palace. Homer, touriste américain et « philosophe amateur », passionné par la Grèce ancienne et ses philosophes, arrive en Grèce à la recherche de la Vérité. Maria and Paul, a couple in their forties, travel through Spain with a new friend, Claire (Romy Schneider), a younger woman. The couple's daughter is also part of the trip. On their way to Madrid, they stop in a small town and are told by police that a local man who has killed his wife and her lover is on the loose in the area. There is a massive thunderstorm and the group has no choice but to stay in the town's only hotel, which is jammed beyond capacity with other travelers in the same situation. Maria, an out of control alcoholic who lives most of her life in a walking, booze-fueled dream state, seems to be subtly encouraging her husband Paul to have a sexual relationship with Claire as a way to reintroduce sexuality into their situation. While the thunderstorm is still raging, Maria secretly steps out of the crowded hotel onto a low balcony to down a bottle of booze and accidentally sees Paul and Claire kissing on a higher balcony. She is simultaneously excited and devastated. While out in the rain Maria discovers the fugitive hiding on a nearby rooftop and decides to help him escape. She then hides the murderer, a young man, in an outcropping of rocks out in lonely stretch of highway in the desert.

À New York, du côté de Brooklyn, les membres d'une pauvre famille d'immigrés italiens se déchirent à cause de la relation amoureuse entre Rodolfo, jeune cousin clandestin fraîchement débarqué, et Catherine, nièce du patriarche Eddie Carbone, un docker des quais de Brooklyn. Ce dernier l'a élevé comme sa fille et la protège peut-être plus que de raison. Pour l'empêcher d'épouser Rodolfo, Eddie dénonce celui-ci aux services de l'immigration ; Marco (le frère de Rodolfo, lui aussi immigré, hébergé et dénoncé par Eddie) désire se venger. Eddie, s'estimant blessé dans son honneur (Marco l'a en effet insulté et lui a craché au visage aux yeux de la communauté), souhaite également en découdre avec ce dernier. Les deux s'affrontent dans un combat final, lors duquel Eddie perd tragiquement la vie.
