The city-state of Rome has just expelled its Etruscan overlords and become a republic. The Etruscans declare war in an attempt to regain their territory; in the ensuing battle, they capture the courageous warrior Scaevola and threaten to torture him unless he gives them strategic information. Scaevola thrusts his right hand into a brazier and lets it burn, demonstrating that he loves Rome too much to care about physical pain. The awed Etruscans release him, but the damage to his hand prevents him from wielding a sword.

Peu après la chute de Troie, Ménélas ramène Hélène. Faisant naufrage durant une violente tempête, elle est sauvée par Arion. Elle demande alors asile au roi Ramsès de Thèbes. Séduit par sa beauté, il délaisse Naïs, sa favorite, et ne se préoccupe même plus des troubles menaçant son pays. Jalouse, Naïs propose son aide à Hélène pour rentrer au pays. Il parvient à s'évader et à rejoindre Aménophobis qui règne sur la Basse Egypte. Il arrive finalement à temps pour sauver Hélène pendant qu'Aménophobis triomphe dans Thèbes avec son armée.

The story begins in Cairo where Okra (Akim Tamiroff), using a bikini-clad accomplice (Maria Grazia Buccella) as a distraction, hijacks $3 million in gold bullion. The thieves need a way to smuggle the two tons of gold bars into Europe. There are only four master criminals considered able to smuggle the gold: one is French (but so crippled he can barely move his wheelchair); one is Irish (but so nearsighted that he is arrested after trying to hold up a police station instead of a bank); one is German (but so fat he can barely get through a door). Sandro (Nino Manfredi) et Laura (Eleonora Giorgi) sont mariés depuis 16 ans. Laura a hérité d'une librairie d'ouvrages anciens et d'art dans Venise. Voulant en avoir le cœur net, il revient chez lui en pleine nuit, découvre sa femme qui dort nue dans le lit et reste dubitatif. Il se met ensuite à enquêter sur cette fameuse photo, une quête qui lui fera parcourir tout Venise.
