Synopsis
It is from a festival of the family temple that the movie starts; a very auspicious moment. Once a prestigious Brahmin family, Poovulla Kovilakom is now in the verge of destruction of all means. The Kovilakom is now administered by Ravi, Ettan Thampuran. His younger brother Aniyan Thampuran (Unni), though an adult, is a meek and gullible person. He has no interest in the matters concerning the governance and administration of a seemingly big family. He often plays with children and among the people of the place, he has gotten no respect and power because of his inefficacy. Ettan Thampuran’s misadministration leads the house and family to debts which is exploited by the land-agent Pangunni Nair who arrange people to buy the Kovilakom’s land. Ettan Thampuran’s wife called ‘ettathi’ is a very domineering kind of a person who does nothing significant. She has a company, Pangunni Nair’s daughter with her all the time and with whom Ettan Thampuran has an extra marital relationship of an unwritten consent. Kalyaniyamma, relative of the two brothers, who cares Aniyan Thampuran as a mother cares her child, is one among the only persons who support and understand him. Aniyan Thampuran’s friend Madhavan Kutty, though belongs to a lower caste has a relationship with Indira who belongs to the caste or family of Pothuvals. Indira’s family has some financial difficulties and their condition is not so good. One day she elopes with Madhavan Kutty. This becomes a news in the place but about which Aniyan Thampuran finds nothing wrong. Indira’s brother Rajan is a jobless person who sings in the temple over which the Kovilakom has some power, probably that is passed on from different generations.Actors

The story revolves around Aniyan Thampuran (Mohanlal), a naive and innocent prince of an erstwhile royal family, and his household in a village of Kerala. His family is heavily indebted by the wayward lifestyle of his elder brother Chettan Thampuran (Sukumaran). Chettan Thampuran's untimely death forces Aniyan to take responsibility for the family. He loses his house and all properties to pay his brother's debts and is led to financial ruin.

The story revolves around Ravi (Shiva Rajkumar), the son of Ramanna (K. S. Ashwath), a Police Constable who wishes to make his son an Inspector one day. Ravi, a recent college graduate, has many opportunities to enter different fields but he goes with his father's dream of becoming an Inspector. Ramanna gets transferred into a town whose residents are troubled by the rowdy Kari Kaala (Mohan Raj). The police force in the town turns a blind eye to the acts of Kari Kaala. One day Ramanna gets information that Kari Kaala is creating trouble in the market place. Being an honest police man he goes on site to investigate where he takes him on. Hearing of trouble, Ravi too rushes to the market place. Ramanna is no match for the goon and Ravi tries to intervene before his father is killed. A fight ensues between Kari Kaala and Ravi and both are arrested by the police. Since he managed to defeat the reigning rowdy, Ravi is typecast a rowdy by the people of the town.

Sam Alexander (Mohanlal), a fun loving automobile workshop cum garage owner is more keen in scripting and directing plays than running his business. A theater addict, Sam, along with his friends, Pappu Mesthiri (Jagathi Sreekumar), Mammoonju (Kunjan), and Preman (Premkumar), is now working on Shakuntahlam, the famous play by Kalidas. Gracy Kutty (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), his mother is too worried with his easy going and careless attitude towards life. With one day, the main actress (Kalpana) who was supposed to play the role of Shakunthala eloping with Krishnan Kutty (Nandu), a fellow artist, Sam is busy searching for a new face to enact Shakunthala. Accidentally, one day, he meets up with Sridevi Menon (Kanchan), with whom he fell in love with. He attempts all methods to woo her and finally she falls in. Sam casts her as Sahkunthala in his drama and she unwillingly agrees for it without the knowledge of her parents. Sreedevi, daughter of Meledath Vishwanatha Menon, of the rich businessman in the city, thus acts in the drama, but on way back home, both Sam and Sreedevi are caught red handed by Vishnu Menon (Devan), her brother. Ravindran Nair (Vijayakumar), the I.G.of police, and friend of Menon had plans of getting his son Rajkumar (Kasan Khan) married to Sreedevi, so that he could own up a huge part of the business empire. With the help of Ravindran Nair, Sam is beaten up by police. Once out of jail, both Sam and Sreedevi elopes away and spend a few days away from the worries. In mean time, the duo are again caught by Menon. Sam is arrested for kidnapping Sreedevi and is jailed. At jail, he comes to know that Sreedevi is pregnant with his kid, but has no way to save the kid. Upon knowing that Sreedevi is pregnant, she is transferred to a distant place. Once, she gives birth to a baby boy, the attitude of Menon and Vishnu changes and they started looking upon him as their heir. But, sensing danger, Ravindran Nair sends Rajkumar to kidnap and kill the kid. Vishnu realizes the plan of Rajkumar and tries to save his sister and kid. In meantime, Sam escapes from jail and reaches out the house where Sreedevi stays. She attempts to commit suicide in bid to escape from Kumar, but is saved miraculously by Sam, who makes a dramatic entry. He defeats Kumar and saves the kid. Menon and Vishnu happily unite Sam and Sreedevi, and Sam happily goes back to jail after seeing Sreedevi and his wife one more time.

Achuthan Nair (Thilakan), an honest and sincere police constable, has a loving family consisting of his wife Ammu (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), two sons and two daughters. Achuthan Nair wants his elder son Sethumadhavan (Mohanlal) to be a police inspector. He shares a cordial and amiable relation with his son. Bhaskaran(Sreenivasan), the local village goldsmith is in love with Snehalatha(Urvashi), the daughter of P.V.Panicker(Innocent), the local astrologer. They are neighbors.
