Synopsis

Sunil Verma, head of an advertising agency, Shobhna, his wife and their daughter, studying in a boarding school, lead a happy, middle-class life. During an outdoor shooting session for a commercial, Sunil falls for the charms of a beautiful model, Kiran. The extra-marital affair disrupts the family life of Sunil and Shobna. In an attempt to revive her marriage Shobhna takes a holiday when Kiran barges in to disrupt things. Sunil confesses to her affair and Shobhna walks out of the home. She successfully revives her career as a radio singer, while Kiran moves in to take her place. But soon Sunil begins to miss and long for his estranged wife. Now Kiran decides to move out bringing the family together once again.

"Bhavna" the movie is a story of a less privileged woman. Ajay leaves Bhavna alone and many days pass . The days turn into weeks and weeks into months . Still there is no news of Ajay . Ajay never came back to Bhavna. Bhavna manages to procure Ajay's father's address and goes in search of Ajay . Bhavna is astonished to see that Ajay has married another woman as per his father's wishes. Dejected Bhanva confides her sorrows to Shobha, her best friend . But this was not the end of her struggles in life.

For years an aging Rukmini Bai (Shabana Azmi) has been the Madame of a brothel in Hyderabad, India. One day she gets the news that she now has a new landlord in Mr. Gupta (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), whose daughter is to marry the mayor's son Sushil, shortly. Led by City Councillor, Shantidevi, the people in this town demand that this brothel be moved elsewhere, preferably on the outskirts of the town, and they do succeed, compelling Rukmini to move with her women to their new location, which happens to be near the Dargah of Baba Karak Shah. Ironically, this attracts a lot of people, and the patronage to Rukmini's bordello increases. Then complications set in when Sushil refuses to marry his father's choice, childlike Malti, and wants to marry Zeenat (Smita Patil) - a prostitute, not entirely by choice and seeking for a better existence, who resides with Rukmini.

Master Dinanth (Amitabh Bachchan) is a freedom fighter and participated in the war against the British in 1942 and independence was eventually won in 1947. But after independence, the people's love for their country seems to be diminishing and they are too busy betraying it like ex British landlord Thakur Pratab Singh (Amjad Khan). Master Dinanth finds out about Thakur Pratab Singh's illegal activities such as smuggling of weapons and ammunition and gets him arrested. In revenge for putting him in prison, Pratab Singh gets Master Dinnanth's wife Bharati (Sharmila Tagore) and daughter Priti (Parveen Babi) kidnapped by Thakur's partner in crime Sher Singh (Kader Khan) to try to change his ways but to no avail. Thakur also provokes an attack on Masterji's home by the local villagers who accuse Dinanath of betraying his country and he is forced to flee his home with his young son Raju. His wife becomes a victim of leprosy and escapes from Sher Singh, leaving her daughter Priti in a friend's care. Masterji is informed that his wife and daughter could be dead as they find a necklace of hers near the train tracks. Masterji is devastated by his wife and daughter's loss and he and his son move on with their life.
