Freddy Krueger est un personnage de fiction créé par Wes Craven, incarné pour la première fois par Robert Englund dans Les Griffes de la nuit (1984) ainsi que dans les huit autres films de la saga, puis par Jackie Earle Haley dans le remake de 2010 Freddy : Les Griffes de la nuit (neuvième et dernier film de la saga).
Tueur en série brûlé vif par les parents de ses jeunes victimes, Freddy revient d'entre les morts sous forme démoniaque afin de poursuivre et assassiner des adolescents dans leurs rêves. Défiguré et muni de griffes fixées sur un gant de cuir, le personnage est une icône du cinéma d'horreur.
Biography
Freddy Krueger est né en 1942, dans l'hôpital psychiatrique de Springwood. Il est la résultante de multiples viols qu'avait subis Amanda Krueger, alors qu'elle était nonne stagiaire au sein d'un hôpital psychiatrique, fermé depuis l’événement. Elle donne naissance à Freddy Krueger.
Freddy vit au sein d'une famille d'adoption hostile à son égard et il est le souffre-douleur de ses camarades de classe. À cet âge la, Krueger présente déjà des signes de sadisme. Il s'adonne aux meurtres de petits animaux. Il apprivoise la souffrance et ses pulsions meurtrières en s'auto-mutilant.
Krueger fut élevé par un tuteur ivrogne qu'il assassina avec une lame de rasoir.
Une vingtaine d'années plus tard, il épouse Loretta, une serveuse, avec laquelle il aura une fille, Katheryn. C'est durant cette période que Freddy assassine des enfants. Il kidnappe et tue une vingtaine d'enfants de la rue Elm depuis son repère, une usine abandonnée. Loretta découvre les actions de Freddy et l'implore en lui promettant de garder son secret. Freddy la battra et l'étranglera à mort sous les yeux de leur fille, alors âgée de cinq ans.
Freddy sera finalement arrêté mais relâché à cause d'un défaut de signature sur l'un des documents d'inculpation. Après le procès, Amanda Krueger se suicide. C'est à ce moment que se propage une comptine à la gloire de l'assassin. Durant une soirée de 1968, les parents du quartier se mobilisent à la poursuite du rôdeur dont ils veulent obtenir justice. Ils retrouvent sa trace, cloîtré dans l'usine et y mettent le feu par de l'essence. Freddy, pris au piège des flammes, décède brûlé vif.
La peur, toujours présente chez les habitants, permet à Freddy de se réincarner dans les cauchemars de la nouvelle progéniture du quartier. Il assassine de nouveau, par le biais des rêves, avec davantage de sadisme. Il s'en suivra une centaine de meurtres au fil des années dans des conditions effroyables.
Dans le sixième film, il est dit que les démons du rêve lui ont proposé de vivre éternellement à travers les cauchemars.
Des années après, complètement oublié par toute la population de Springwood, il ressuscite la créature diabolique Jason Voorhees de la saga Vendredi 13. Freddy manipule le tueur afin qu'il commette des meurtres que les habitants, effrayés, attribueront au croque-mitaine. De ce fait, il possédera le pouvoir de tuer à nouveau.
