C. R. Subburaman also known as C. S. Ram (Telugu: సి.ఆర్.సుబ్బరామన్, Tamil:சி. ஆர். சுப்புராமன்) (1911–1952) was a famous South Indian film music composer and producer. He was born to Ramasamy Iyer at Chintamani village in Thirunelveli, in present-day Tamil Nadu. Music director Shankar of Shankar Ganesh duo is his younger brother. His ancestors were from Krishna district of present Andhra Pradesh and due to this, his family are well spoken of Telugu.

During his short lifespan of about 40 years and cinema life of 10 years, he made lasting fame with films like Devadas, Ratnamala, Chenchu Lakshmi, Balaraju, Laila Majnu and others.

Mothi (Bhanumathi) is a poor Lambadi girl in a village. Raja (Nageswara Rao) came to see the rural nature. He is attracted to the beauty of Mothi and both love each other. He goes home town and forgets her. Meanwhile Mothi's father settles her marriage with Parasuram (Mukkamala). She escapes from home to avoid marriage and reach the town. She joins a dance troupe and giving performances. She identifies Raja with Lata (Sriranjani) in one of her shows and goes into shock. Unable to find Mothi, Raja marries Latha. Before the facts are known, Parasuram kills Mothi, while Mothi's friend kills Parasuram.

Prabhu (ANR) dreamt of a lovely lady, his 'Dream Girl' or 'Swapna Sundari'. He encounters a tribal queen (G. Varalakshmi) while on tour, who falls in love with him, but he rejects her. He finally meets his 'Swapna Sundari' (Anjali Devi) who is actually a Deva Kanya. The love is mutual. She leaves her Godly abode to stay with Prabhu. But an evil Mantrik (Mukkamala) finds out that with her help, he can conquer the world and become invincible so he kidnaps her. Prabhu, with the help of the tribal queen vanquishes the evil Mantrik, but the Rani dies. Swapna Sundari and Prabhu live happily ever after.

Qais Ibn Al Mulawwa, son of Shah Amri is sent to Damascus to pursue his education. There he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Laila, daughter of the Najd chieftain. Though Laila reciprocates his love in equal measure, her father opposes this match and keeps her confined in the house. Heartbroken at this separation, Qais loses his mental faculties and wanders aimlessly, always uttering the name of Laila. He is soon known far and wide as Majnoon, the obsessed. Laila is forcibly married off to Bakht, a scion of the royal family of Iraq. But she refuses to let Bakht touch her. Overwhelming misery and wretchedness of her circumstances lead to her death and hearing of her demise, the grief-stricken Qais falls dead too. The lovers unite in death.

Nallathambi (NSK) a simple rural man inherits an estate from his deceased Zamindar relative. The Zamindar's daughter Pushpa (Bhanumathi) falls in love with Nallathambi. However he loves another girl (T. A. Madhuram). Bhoopathy (Sahasranamam) the estate manager has his eye on the wealth and tries to cheat Nallathambi out of it. He goads Pushpa into filing a suit that Nallathambi is mentally insane. In the end Nallathambi defeats Bhoopathy's machinations.

He proceeds to fall for a beautiful princess and impresses her under false pretences. He gets his comeuppance towards the end, his dubious past revealed and is imprisoned. Thereupon his conscience awakes, he is filled with remorse at the thought of his patient wife.
