Henry W. Gerrard (parfois crédité Henry Gerrard) , né vers 1894 au Canada, mort le 19 novembre 1934, est un directeur de la photographie canadien.

Biography

Installé aux États-Unis, Henry W. Gerrard débute comme chef opérateur sur Ali Baba et les Quarante Voleurs, film muet de la Fox réalisé par les frères Sidney et Chester M. Franklin, sorti en 1918. Puis il exerce régulièrement à ce poste de 1927 à 1934, au sein de la Paramount jusqu'en 1931, à la RKO ensuite. En tout, il contribue à trente-six films américains, dont trois westerns (ex. : L'Attaque de la caravane en 1931, avec Gary Cooper et Lili Damita). Il collabore aussi à deux films britanniques, sortis respectivement en 1931 et 1932.

En particulier, il assiste le réalisateur William A. Wellman sur six films (certains perdus), dont Les Mendiants de la vie (1928, avec Louise Brooks, Richard Arlen et Wallace Beery). Parmi ses autres films notables, mentionnons Les Chasses du comte Zaroff d'Ernest B. Schoedsack et Irving Pichel (1932, avec Joel McCrea, Fay Wray et Leslie Banks), Les Quatre Filles du docteur March de George Cukor (1933, avec Katharine Hepburn et Joan Bennett), ou encore L'Emprise de John Cromwell (1934, avec Leslie Howard et Bette Davis).

Joe, an amoral capitalist and boyfriend of Sarah Griswold, gets a job as a clerk in a New York City advertising agency and starts to work his way to the top. He is fired, but Sarah intervenes on his behalf and he manages to create an ad that earns him a promotion. He meets the mistress of his boss and decides he wants to win her from him. The company is in trouble, but Joe has invested wisely and sells out his boss to his competitor. He abandons Sarah and proposes to the mistress, who marries him. Joe becomes head of his agency, but because he neglects his new wife, she becomes the mistress of another man. He attempts suicide, but Sarah rescues him and nurses him back to health.

In 1932, a luxury yacht is sailing through a channel off the western coast of South America. The captain is worried about the channel lights not matching the charts, but is quickly dissuaded from changing course by the wealthy passengers for the sake of time, including famous big game hunter and author Bob Rainsford (Joel McCrea). It is a calm evening, with the cheerful passengers relaxing over drinks and a game of cards. Bob and his companions are debating about whether hunting is at all sporting for the animal being hunted after a friend asks if he would exchange places with a tiger he had recently hunted in Africa. Ricardo Cortez as Gary Curtis (alias Farnsbarns who is known for being a PI that skirts the law in New York) is sent to get some letters from Karen Morley as Jenny Wren (who is a courtisan). Later that night Jenny Wren is killed. A road washed out keeps everyone at Crestwood. Now Gary Curtis must find out who the murder is before the police arrive and pin it on him.
