Mohammed Zahur "Khayyam" Hashmi, better known as Khayyam, is an Indian music composer whose career spanned four decades (1953–1990).

He has won three Filmfare Awards for Best Music in 1977 for Kabhi Kabhie and 1982 for Umrao Jaan, and a lifetime achievement award in 2010 . He was awarded the 2007 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Theatre. He has been awarded the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for 2011.

This film is remake of famous Kannada film Gejje Pooje starring Kalpana. Courtesan Madame Subbalaxmi heads a household where men are not born, but are welcome. Women are not welcome, but their birth is. Subbalaxmi is thrilled when her protege, Sangeeta, gives birth to a baby girl, who they name Chandra. Shortly thereafter they relocate to a small community. Sangeeta wants Chandra to study, and she is allowed to do so. Chandra meets her neighbor, Kunal, and their family, and is welcomed by them. The movie is about the life of a dacoit, Thakur Suraj Singh (Raaj Kumar) . He was the son of a zamindar, but his parents were killed by the dacoit Zaalim Singh. In the confusion,Suraj got separated from his brother and sister. When he grew up, he becomes a dacoit in order to take revenge his parents killer. After suraj killed his parent's killer, the dacoit Zaalim Singh's son (ranjit singh) tried to take revenge Suraj. Accidentally, he meets his sister anu (farida jalal) and his aunt chotima (nirupa roy). On the other hand he fell in love with Tannibai (moushmi chatterjee). The police also remain active to arrest the daccoits. Inspector ritu daman singh (shatrughan sinha) ultimately succeeds in arresting badan singh or suraj, but he ran away from the prison. When anu comes to meet suraj, it became clear that retu daman singh is their youngest brother. But this relation cannot move him away from fulfilling his duty of police honestly. In a police encounter both suraj and tannibai escapes as suraj's friend sultana (amjad khan) sacrifices his life. But at the end of the movie in another police encounter during suraj and tannibai's marriage, they both get killed by police.

Arvind Kumar Choudhary is widowed, respectable and wealthy businessman, who lives with his only son, Arun (Rajesh Khanna), in a palatial house. He remarries another woman, Sujata, a widow with two daughters, Veena and Seema. Arun does not respect her and refuses to even speak with her. Arun meets Neema Deshmukh (Shabana Azmi) and both of fall in love. With approval of their respective families, they get married. Then things start to slide financially for the Choudharys when Arun accidentally breaks a valuable diamond while daydreaming about Neema; the Choudharys lose all their savings, building, vehicles and property, move to a shanty apartment, and Arvind passes away. Arun takes over the reins of this family, and starts talking to his stepmother. Neema gives birth to a baby boy and they name him Abhinandan. Misunderstandings occur between Sujata and Neema, they escalate, fueled by some gossip from neighboring women, leading to arguments between Arun and her. Then one day, Mahendra, Neema's brother sees Arun with another woman, informs Neema, who quickly packs her things and leaves Arun. She goes to the courts, gets the custody of Abhinandan, and Arun is only allowed a weekly 4 - PM visit, which he is unhappy with, and decides to wait until his son is 14 and will then take him home. Then Neema's father is arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau accepting a huge bribe from Mr. Lalwani; Mahendra asks Neema to sell her jewelery so that he can immigrate to Germany, she does so, he leaves, never to be heard from again.

Gaurishankar Srivastav (Sunder Purohit) lives with his wife Savitri (Nirupa Roy) and two sons Vikas (Sujit Kumar) and Ravi (Jeetendra). Vikas gets married to wealthy Nanda (Bindu) while Ravi continues his education in college. Ravi is attracted to Usha (Sulakshana Pandit) and hopes to marry her. Gaurishankar is nearing retirement while Vikas is unable to get employment. When Vikas get an offer, he must deposit ₹ 5000. Nanda borrows this money from her uncle and Vikas gets the job. Unaware of the fact, Gaurishankar who works as Cashier in a small firm, steals Rs.5000/- to provide money for his son, but is followed by the watchman. On his way to home, Ravi returning from a Tamasha catches the thief, but is shocked to find his father as thief. To save him from the punishment, he takes the blame on himself. Later Police arrests Ravi for stealing ₹ 5000 from his employer, which shocks his father. The Court finds him guilty and sentences imprisonment for 3 months. Gaurishankar passes away after hearing this, but before death he informs his wife who the real thief was. Savitri is unabel to reveal this fact to anybody. When Ravi completes his sentence, returns home and finds that Usha is getting married to Rakesh (Rakesh Roshan), Dinanath's son. He re-locates to Bombay, gets a job, earns well and sends money to his mother which actually does not reach the right hands as the middle lady Bindu manages to get the money by making false thumb impression. The turn of events after Usha meets Ravi again is the rest of the story when every fact is made open to everybody. The story is scene by scene based on old Bollywood family drama 'maa' starring bharat bhushan and mala sinha.

Noorie (Poonam Dhillon) lives in the Bhaderwah valleys with her father, Ghulam Nabi (Iftekhar) and her dog Khairoo, she has a boyfriend Yusuf (Farooq Shaikh), they decide to get married, the date is decided and preparations begin. But fate had something else in store. As another villager Bashir Khan (Bharat Kapoor) takes a liking to Noorie and approaches Noorie's father for her hand, to which Ghulam Nabi refuses. An angry Bashir Khan then arranges the murder of Gulam Nabi, through his men, using a falling tree. The marriage is suspended, few months later when the marriage preparations are back on, however a few days before the marriage Bashir Khan, who happens to be Yusuf's boss sends him on an errand out of town. While Yusuf is out of town Bashir Khan goes over to Noorie's house and rapes her. Noorie commits suicide and Yusuf gets to know that it all happened because of Bashir, so he runs behid him to kill him followed by Khairoo. They end up into a physial fight and Yusuf gets shot by Bashir. As Bashir runs back, he finds Khairoo there, who finally kills Bashir. Yusuf runs to the place where Noorie's body is and dies there. At the end they both are dug into the ground and unite with each other.
