Richard Collins est un scénariste et producteur américain, né le 20 juillet 1914 à New York et mort le 14 février 2013 à Ventura en Californie.

Collins débute une carrière de scénariste au cours des années 1940. Il travaille à plusieurs reprises avec Paul Jarrico. Placé sur la « liste noire » en raison de ses liens avec le parti communiste, il dénonce une vingtaine de personnalités d'Hollywood devant la commission sur les activités antiaméricaines. Collins reprend sa carrière durant les années 1950, écrit des scénarios, notamment pour Don Siegel, et travaille pour la télévision en tant que scénariste et producteur.

Biography

Jeunesse et formation
Richard Collins naît à New York. Son père est couturier et travaille pour de grandes familles, dont les Vanderbilt. Lorsque les Collins s'installent en Californie, il est scolarisé à la Beverly Hills High School, puis intègre l'université Stanford. Collins abandonne ses études après un semestre en raison de la crise économique. De retour à New York il rejoint la Ligue des jeunes communistes.


Carrière
Richard Collins regagne la Californie. Il est employé par un grand magasin, puis travaille pour différents studios de cinéma, dont la MGM, en tant que scénariste. Collins, qui épouse l'actrice Dorothy Comingore en 1939, participe à l'écriture du scénario de Rulers of the Sea , sorti la même année. Avec Paul Jarrico, il écrit le scénario des films musicaux La Parade aux étoiles (Thousands Cheer) et Song of Russia , sortis sur les écrans en 1943 et 1944, et de la comédie Deux nigauds vendeurs (Little Giant) mettant en vedette les comiques Abbott et Costello.

Richard Collins attire l'attention de la commission sur les activités antiaméricaines (HUAC) de la chambre des représentants, qui considère Song of Russia comme un film de propagande pro-soviétique. Son nom figure sur la liste de 19 membres ou anciens membres du parti communiste des États-Unis travaillant dans l'industrie du cinéma établie en 1947 par la commission, avec laquelle il refuse de coopérer. Son placement sur la « liste noire » ne lui permet plus de travailler pour les studios d'Hollywood. En 1951, Collins accepte de témoigner devant la commission. Il dénonce une vingtaine d'amis et collègues sympathisants ou affiliés au Parti communiste, parmi lesquels figurent son coscénariste Paul Jarrico et Budd Schulberg.

Après son témoignage, sa carrière reprend son cours. Dans les années 1950, Richard Collins participe à l'écriture de plusieurs films de Don Siegel, dont Les Révoltés de la cellule 11 (Riot in Cell Block 11), L'Invasion des profanateurs de sépultures (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) et Le Secret du Grand Canyon (Edge of Eternity). Il signe également le scénario de longs métrages comme Les Aventures de Hajji Baba (The Adventures if Hajji Baba) de Don Weis, Le Culte du cobra (Cult of the Cobra) de Francis D. Lyon, ou encore L'Or du Hollandais (The Badlanders) de Delmer Daves. Collins travaille sur des programmes de télévision comme Gruen Playhouse et General Electric Theater . À partir des années 1960, il écrit des épisodes de séries télévisées comme Les Incorruptibles, Opération vol, Bonanza et Matlock. Il produit plus de 100 épisodes de ces deux dernières.

A fascist group who call themselves New Order want to set some "new rules" in town while the police in Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada) are on strike. They try to scare all of the homosexuals in a bar, but by accident the owner of the establishment is killed, and the leader of the bullies then decides to execute all witnesses. One guy, though, escapes and takes refuge in an isolated block of flats. The young tenants in the house refuse to hand over the survivor, and the bullies then decide to get rid of all the residents in the house. This turns out to be not so easy when the young people in the house barricade their apartments and set up traps and arm themselves in order to fight back.

The film begins with an attempted assassination of a man looking into the Grand Canyon with his binoculars. The assassin disables the emergency brake from the man's car and attempts to run him over as the car goes off the edge. The man leaps out of the way and kills his assassin by throwing him off the rim. He is seen wandering by Eli, an old prospector who attempts to tell a Deputy Sheriff (Cornel Wilde). However Eli has a reputation for telling tall tales, so the deputy ignores him to chase an attractive woman (Victoria Shaw) speeding recklessly down the road. The unidentified man is later found dead, hanging bound and gagged in a former mining office in an abandoned gold mine.

In Ispahan, Persia, a barber named Hajji Baba (John Derek) is leaving his father's shop to find a great fortune. At the same time the Princess Fawzia (Elaine Stewart) is trying to talk her father into giving her in marriage to Nur-El-Din (Paul Picerni) a prince known far and wide. Her father intends for Fawzia to marry a friend and ally, and makes plans to send her to him. But a courier brings word from Nur-El-Din that an escort awaits Fawzia on the outskirts of the city and she escapes the palace disguised as a boy. Hajji encounters the escort-warrior at the rendezvous spot, is attacked and beats up the escort with his barber's tools. The princess arrives and mistakes Hajji as the escort until he mistakes the emerald ring sent by Nur-El-Din to Fawzia as the prize to be delivered. In her efforts to escape him, her turban becomes unbound and Hajji realizes that the girl herself is the treasure Nur-El-Din awaits. Hajji promises to escort her and they spend the night with the caravan of Osman Aga (Thomas Gomez), who invites them to stay for the dancing girls, among them, the incomparable Ayesha (Rosemarie Bowe). The pair are overtaken by the Caliph's (Donald Randolph) guards sent to bring Fawzia back, but the guards are driven off by an invading army of Turcoman women, a band of fierce and beautiful women who prey on passing merchants.
