Frank Hayes (May 17, 1871 – December 28, 1923) was an American film actor of the silent era. He appeared in 73 films between 1913 and 1924. An actor with a unique hatchet face appearance he appeared mostly in comedies. His facial appearance naturally lent to comedic effect in silent films, but, he also showed up in sentimental farces such as A Hoosier Romance (1918), an early film starring Colleen Moore.

He died in Hollywood, California from pneumonia, aged 52.

Biography

Frank Hayes est un acteur de théâtre et de pantomime qui débute en 1898 et devient acteur de cinéma en 1914 en entrant à The Keystone Film Company dirrigée par Mack Sennett où il tient de nombreux seconds rôles. Il débute aux côtés de Roscoe Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplin et Mabel Normand. Il est souvent employé dans l'équipe des Keystone Cops dont il est, à cause de son physique particulier, un élément remarquable.

Son visage extrêmement mobile et ses mimiques particulièrement expressives correspondent parfaitement au jeu de l'acteur des films muets et sont exploitées dans les comédies burlesques de l'époque. Il joue en général des personnages bien plus âgés Il a notamment à de très nombreuses reprises campé des rôles féminins en se travestissant.

Il meurt en 1923 à l'âge de 52 ans des suites d'une pneumonie.

As summarized in a magazine, Fatty (Arbuckle) meets Winnie (Westover) after rescuing her father Frank (St. John) from a well at their farm and is smitten with her. Fatty is dismissed and leaves, however, as Frank wants Winnie to marry Al Clove (St. John). Fatty returns to the farm in the disguise of a hired girl so that he can be near his beloved, but finds he must fend off the flirtations of her father Frank. Winnie's marriage is all arranged, but at the dress rehearsal the groom is missing, so the "hired girl" takes his place and goes through the practice ceremony, word for word, with the bride. When the wedding day arrives, the ceremony is broken up when Fatty and Winnie announce that they have already been married as the rehearsal was the real thing.

Based upon a review in a film magazine, Jane Neill (Martin) goes to work for irritable old dramatist David Lyman (Aitken), who is annoyed by the extravagance of his spendthrift nephew Monty Lyman (Welch). Monty throws a ball at his uncle's home while Jane is there at work, and she sees him under favorable circumstances and comes to idealize him. When the playwright dies, Jane discovers that he has left his vast property to her because of her assistance in his last great work. Thomas Wentworth Duncan, a millionaire, faces the prospect of being broke after a fradulent trustee absconds with his money. Duncan is now faced with getting a job to support himself, but he has never been accustomed to doing anything more strenuous than polo. Duncan has also fallen in love with Sally Reeves, an old flame, but he realizes he no longer has the fortune and lifestyle to which she is accustomed and obviously cannot ask her to marry him. After returning from a gala that he fully expects to be his last one with his elite friends, he finds a mysterious letter on his table inscribed "personal and important". The letter informs him that his financial woes are well known to the letter-writer and if he will give one month to an unexplained project, the sender will pay him $250,000. Duncan decides to reject the offer in the letter, but the thought of being with Sally makes him change his mind. The next day, a limousine arrives for Duncan and with it a huge man whom he names Goliath. Duncan is taken to the hospital of Dr. Spleen, a fanatic who wants to transplant Duncan's perfectly good heart into the body of Judah P. Corpus, Sally’s rich uncle, who wants to remain young. When Duncan learns that Spleen's previous heart transplant patients, which were two dogs, that both died, he becomes nervous and wants out of the deal, but he is prevented from leaving by Goliath. As Spleen is about to perform the operation, the excitement proves to be too much for him and he drops dead. Sally's uncle doesn't know that the Dr. has died, and thinks the operation has been performed. After leaving the hospital, Duncan receives news from the authorities that the trustee has been found and that his fortune is saved, so he and Sally can now get married.
