Yoshio Inaba (稲葉 義男, Inaba Yoshio, July 15, 1920–April 20, 1998) was a Japanese actor best known for his role as one of the title characters (the good-natured, second-in-command Gorobei) in Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. He died of a heart attack at the age of 77.

The sword (one of a pair known as "The Equals") was a family heirloom, passed down through the generations, and had been lost during World War II. It was finally tracked down in California where Yoshiida's son, Toshio, finds it. He looks for someone to hire to act as a decoy in order to safely smuggle it into Japan, and back to its rightful owner, Yoshida-san. Rick Murphy (Scott Glenn) is contracted to smuggle a rare sword into Japan, only to find upon his arrival that it is a fake. Aggravated that he has been used as a decoy, he is faced with the prospect of being killed by Yoshida-san's (Toshirō Mifune) brother, Hideo. Instead, he is advised to infiltrate Yoshida's martial arts school and obtain the sword. He does so, yet finds himself being drawn into the ways of Japanese etiquette and tradition to the point where he returns the sword to Yoshida himself after having the perfect opportunity to escape with it. Murphy then humbly asks Yoshida-san if he can be forgiven and taken back in because he wants to learn the ways of Bushido. Yoshida agrees, but only if Murphy follows Yoshida's conditions.

Yoshitaro Nomura’s 1974 film of Seicho Matsumoto’s immensely popular detective story tells the tale of two detectives, Imanishi (Tetsuro Tamba) and Yoshimura (Kensaku Morita), tasked with tracking down the murderer of an old man, found bludgeoned to death in a rail yard. La famille Tashiro mène une vie paisible à Kamakura. En déplacement à Tokyo, Isao, le chef de famille, rencontre fortuitement son voisin, Sugimoto. Celle-ci adorait se sentir étranglée durant l'acte d'amour, et le jeu s'était, cette fois-là, mal terminé. Malgré les conseils de son épouse, puis de Sugimoto, également informé de l'accident, Isao, parfaitement incapable de surmonter ses sentiments de culpabilité, menace de se dénoncer à la police. À la suite du décès accidentel de son époux, Kuniko Bannai doit élever seule son fils, Takeshi, un garçon de six ans fort dissipé. Or, pour son malheur, Kinuko Kakinuma, l'épouse d'un industriel, conduisant sa voiture de sport en compagnie d'un jeune amant, Ogasawara, renverse Takeshi et le blesse mortellement. Celle-ci ne veut croire qu'à un léger accident et poursuit donc sa route. Son mari, craignant de compromettre sa carrière, demande à son chauffeur de se dénoncer à la place de sa femme. D'un autre côté, le frère de Kuniko, Kōji, un petit malfrat habitué des mauvais coups, obtient, au terme d'une dure transaction, un dédommagement financier important... Mais, Kuniko n'est guère plus heureuse : « Mon fils était tout pour moi, il n'est plus là, je veux m'amuser avant de mourir », dit-elle. Toutefois, lorsqu'elle apprend la vérité, grâce à l'une de ses voisines, témoin de l'accident, un désir de vengeance s'empare d'elle. Elle rôde, désormais, autour de la demeure des Kakinuma et parvient à se faire engager chez eux comme femme de ménage.
