Vinayan comes from a rich family but he cannot stand up for modern lifestyle. His brother spends time dancing at clubs, his sister always listens to the radio, and his parents are always busy. He gets tired of life in the city and moves to a village taking a small job as a village officer. There he falls in love with a village girl but she is just the opposite of Vinayan and she wants to enjoy the luxurious life in a city. Soon they part. Vinayan continues in the village while his wife moves to the city. After a while she understands that her village life was far better and returns to her own village and the couple unites.

Bhaskaran(Sreenivasan), the local village goldsmith is in love with Snehalatha(Urvashi), the daughter of P.V.Panicker(Innocent), the local astrologer. They are neighbors. Snehalatha asks for a gold necklace made of 10 pavans (sovereigns) as a symbol of Bhaskaran's love. Bhaskaran makes a necklace and hands it over to Snehalatha. An angry Panicker (her father) finds this out, admonishes her and pockets the golden necklace. He reasons that it was "brotherly love" which made Bhaskaran give the necklace to his daughter.

Seetha is from an aristocratic family and is in love with her cousin Vishnu. Seetha's father Kesava Kuruppu forbids her to prolong this affair as he wanted his daughter not to marry a man from a lower caste. Seetha gets married to a bank employee much against her wish. By the time the couple understand and like each other Seetha loses her husband in a road mishap. Kuruppu, the determined man he is, arranges her next marriage with Narayanan, a widower, who already had two children from his first marriage. Seetha had to agree and gets married to Narayanan. She makes herself happy by spending time with Narayanan's children. After a few days, her husband, who was a heart patient, dies. She had to leave that house after being harassed by Narayanan's annoying sister. She manages to get a shelter in a maid servant's house. Her father came to know this and realises his false deeds. In the climax, Vishnu gets married to Seetha.

Premachandran (Mohanlal) is a carpenter who lives along with his father, Balan Master (Bharath Gopi), and works along with his friend, Manikandan (Innocent). They are now working on a house near the house of a rich landlord. Kanmani (Meera Jasmine), who was sold by her mother, works in that house as a servant and is ill-treated. Seethamma (KPAC Lalitha) lives along with her daughter, Kumari (Muthumani), who has a liking towards Premachandran. One night, Premachandran goes to his workplace to take his tools. He sees Kanmani leaving the house and is puzzled. He follows her. She was on the verge of committing suicide when Premachandran rescues her. He gives her shelter in one room in a building owned by Chettiyar (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), telling Chettiyar that his friend did not get the bus to go back home. Kanmani dresses up as a boy by the name of Velayuthan Kutty and soon starts working with Manikandan and Premachandran. Balan Master starts liking the disguised boy. One day, Premachandran tells Kanmani that he has planned to rescue her by sending her to Tamil Nadu to work in a banian company where Premachandran's friend is working. Kanmani refueses to go. Premachandran accidentally confesses to Manikandan that Velayuthan Kutty is actually the missing Kanmani. Manikandan has no peace and shouts out the truth in the middle of the night. Two policemen, accidentally hear this and take Premachandran and Kanmani into custody.
