This film is based on Buchi Babu’s radio play Rayala Karunakrutyam. The film is considered as a timeless Indian film classic It is the first Telugu film to be screened at International film festivals like Asia Pacific Film Festival. The film had a public re-release with thirteen prints and Chinese subtitles, in Beijing, on 14, March 1953,
B. N. Reddy recalls: "When I went to Hampi to shoot my first film Vande Mataram in 1939, I was deeply attracted to Sri Krishna Devarayalu. I wanted to make a film on Sri Krishna Devaraya. Years passed by. But I could not get the right story. Fortunately, Malliswari happened. I think it is the best movie I have directed." The film is listed among CNN-IBN's list of "100 greatest Indian films of all time".
Synopsis
During the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire, there was a system to bring willing women to the royal palace and render them official residents. This was called 'Rani Vasam'. According to this royal tradition, they sent palanquins to their houses after they presented the family with gifts and jewellery. These Rani Vasam women should never have any contact with any man or let any man see them without permission. If any one violated the law, they were beheaded.Actors

Devadasu, son of Ravulapalle zamindar Narayana Rao (S. V. Ranga Rao), and Parvati, daughter of his not-so-rich neighbour Neelakantham (Doraswamy) are childhood friends. The King (Jean Marais) promises his dying Queen that after her death he will only marry a woman as beautiful and virtuous as she. Pressed by his advisers to remarry and produce an heir, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to fulfil his promise is to marry his own daughter, the Princess (Catherine Deneuve). Following the advice of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy (Delphine Seyrig), the Princess demands a series of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts, in the hope that her father will be forced to give up his plans of marriage. However, the King succeeds in providing her with dresses the colour of the weather, of the moon and of the sun, and finally with the skin of a magic donkey that excretes jewels, the source of his kingdom's wealth. Donning the donkey skin, the Princess flees her father's kingdom to avoid the incestuous marriage.

Kittu (Aftab Shivdasani) is an arts student in Pune and is madly in love with actress and film star Malika (Urmila Matondkar). He has posters up on his wall and goes to all of her movies, and even fantasizes that she is there with him when he is watching these items. His father concerned with his son's declining exam scores, confronts Kittu on his obsession and tears down the posters. In 1482 Paris, Clopin, a gypsy puppeteer, narrates the origin of the titular hunchback. A group of gypsies sneak illegally into Paris, but are ambushed by Judge Claude Frollo, the minister of justice. A gypsy woman in the group attempts to flee with her deformed baby, but Frollo chases and kills her outside Notre Dame. He tries to kill the baby as well, but the cathedral's archdeacon intervenes and accuses Frollo of murdering an innocent woman. To atone for his sin, Frollo reluctantly agrees to raise the deformed child in Notre Dame as his son, naming him Quasimodo.
