Pantulamma (Telugu: పంతులమ్మ) is a 1977 Telugu drama film directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. The film won Nandi Award for Best Music direction for Rajan-Nagendra and Lyricist for Veturi Sundararama Murthy and also Laksmi for best actress.

Synopsis

Rajesh (Ranganadh) is a film actor who is widowed with a child. He is on the lookout for a teacher for his son. A friend's sister Sharada (Lakshmi) joins as the boys stay-at-home teacher. Rajesh is still very much attached to his late wife Sita (Deepa). He out on his work most of the time and house is run by his sister(Girija) who imposes her authority in the house by any means. Her doctor Sarat Babu helps her in carrying out some of her nefarious tasks.

The story espouses the evils of drink, Parvathi (Lakshmi) is a happy girl just married to a very loving husband, Karuppan(Sreekanth). With kind parents-in-law and a doting husband, her life is blissful. Soon, she is blessed with a child. Karuppan wants to increase his earnings and decides to buy a cart, though Parvathi is unwilling, asserting it is happier to be contented with what they have. However Karuppan takes a loan from a money lender and buys a cart. Initially, everything looks rosy. But Karuppan happens to cross the toddy shops on his way home. Slowly, he is initiated into the habit of drink and soon becomes an addict. Parvathi’s life changes into one of hardship and woe. The neglect of Karuppan results in the death of the child. Parvathi’s life becomes tragic. Karuppan is not able to repay the loan. The money lender’s son takes advantage of increasingly abominable attitude of her husband. Parvathi helplessly gives in to the approaches of the moneylender’s son. Coming to know about this, Karuppan throws a scythe at the moneylender’s son, which nearly kills him. Karuppan is arrested. Parvathi is rejected by her kith and kin. Alone she struggles to get her husband released. On the advice of a lawyer she makes a statement in the court that she is guilty, thinking it will facilitate the release of her husband.

Jayachandra Maharaja (Vijay Kumar) of the Chandraprabha Dynasty deserts Vasundhara (K. R. Vijaya), a woman who gives birth to his son. Vasundhara, loses the child in a cyclone while crossing a river. She is found the hermitage revives her. Vasundhara, on learning the loss of her son attempts suicide. Dharamraaj (Rajendra Kumar) and Balram Choudhary (Sunil Dutt) are two friends who earn their living by farming. Dharamraaj then goes to Bombay to be a businessman and Raju is sent to a hostel and then to America for further studies. Years later Dharamraaj informs Balram that the marriage cannot take place. Balram returns home with this news and in shock his wife Savitri passes away. Guddi swears never to speak with or about Raju or his family again.
