On the evening of August 15, 1995, Nick Rosenberg and his girlfriend Laura Faulkner arrive at a small hotel in the Everglades, Florida to celebrate the 80th birthday of the famous physician Dr. George Rosenberg. Barney Gorman (Tony Danza) works hard as a garbageman, but his career indirectly embarrasses his family. All the Philadelphia Eagles' coach wants to do is impress the football fans in Philadelphia, but having a team that lacks success makes that hard for them. But one day, when Barney and his friend are picking up garbage, Barney takes out his frustration and kicks a water jug at the city dump, which also happens to be a scouting location for the Eagles to buy land in order to build a new stadium, and the owner is present. The jug goes so far, that the Eagles' coach sees and asks Barney to be their new kicker, which the owner feels is an excellent publicity stunt in "giving an average Joe a shot at the NFL".

Nomi Malone is a young drifter who hitchhikes to Las Vegas hoping to make it as a showgirl. Private detective and former Drug Enforcement agent Parrish (Lindsay Frost) is hired to be a bodyguard for a week to 8-year-old Kimberly Howard (Deborah Ann Gorman), who currently serves the key role in the custody battle of her parents James (Joseph Hacker) and Glenna (Annabella Price). James fears that Glenna will run off with Kimberly, considering that she is losing the battle, is refusing alimony and is advised by the judge to seek psychiatric help. James is awarded temporary custody, and hires Parrish for assistance during his work hours. Glenna, meanwhile, is heartbroken over having lost the case, and tells her lawyer that she hates how James can abuse Kimberly on a daily basis now. Her lawyer feels sorry for the woman and puts her in contact with former reporter Nettie Forbes (Veronica Hamel), who has spent a year in prison for attempting to murder the man who had abused and killed her daughter. Since then, Nettie specializes in helping mothers to kidnap their children from their abusive husbands, and she offers Glenna a new identity following the kidnapping of Kimberly.

An intruder in a black mask and clothing ties up San Francisco socialite Page Forrester at her remote beach house and kills her with a hunting knife with a jagged edge. He writes the word "Bitch" on the wall with her blood. Her husband Jack (Bridges) later recovers in a clinic with a bloody head wound, claiming to have been knocked unconscious and awoken to find Page's body. After her funeral, he is arrested for her murder by DA Thomas Krasny, based on evidence that includes a witness at a club who saw a hunting knife in Jack's locker; medical suggestion that Jack's head wound was self-inflicted; Jack's fingerprints being at the crime scene with Page's; and Jack inheriting all of Page's corporate and personal assets in the event of her death. Forrester tries to hire high-profile lawyer Teddy Barnes to defend him after hearing of her high success rate. Barnes, however, used to work for Krasny, and is reluctant to take the case as she stopped working in criminal law after an incident with him.
