The film is set in the Nelakondapalli village of Adilabad district in Nizam Princely State of Hyderabad of the late 1940s. The feudal society is under the vice-like grip of an aristocratic family and its head, a Dorasani (Shwetha Menon). Mallamma (Baby Annie) is the darling of the village, who is living in perpetual humiliation. They seek solace in her songs. Brought up by Sambayya, an old man, she develops a mysterious attachment to a basil tree which is regarded as holy by the entire village.

In the ancient Kingdom of Mahishmati in India, Sivagami, the queen mother (Ramya Krishnan), carrying a baby in her arms, emerges from a cave adjoining a big waterfall. She kills the soldiers pursuing her and sacrifices herself to save the baby. Local villagers spot the queen's hand carrying baby in the river and rescues the infant. In Sultanpur, a picturesque village in Pakistan, villagers have gathered to watch a game of cricket between India and Pakistan on television. Among them is a pregnant woman (Meher Vij) who, after giving birth, names her daughter Shahida after Shahid Afridi, the player who had won the game for Pakistan. On an afternoon, a six-year old Shahida falls off a cliff, but is saved by an overhanging tree. She loses her ability to speak from the accident. Her worried mother takes her to the shrine of Nizamuddin Auliya, a Sufi saint, in Delhi, on the belief that it would regain the latter's speech.

Athili Sathi Babu (Ravi Teja) is a small-time thief and crook who is crazy about acts of daredevilry who falls in love with Neeraja (Anushka Shetty) who is in Hyderabad to attend a marriage.
