Add to a movie listBeta (Hindi: बेटा translation: Son) is a 1992 Bollywood drama film, directed by Indra Kumar. It featured Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor and Aruna Irani in pivotal roles. The film is an official remake of the 1969 Kannada film Mallammana Pavada, directed by Puttanna Kanagal.
Beta was the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1992. It won five Filmfare Awards; both Kapoor and Dixit won the Best Actor and Best Actress awards, respectively. Anuradha Paudwal won the Best Female Playback Singer Award for the item number Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, while Saroj Khan won the Filmfare Award for Best Choreography, and Irani won the Best Supporting Actress award.
The film became popular due to many reasons. Initially, actress Sridevi was first offered the role of Saraswati, but she refused, because she had collaborated with Kapoor numerous times before. The item number Dhak Dhak Karne Laga remains one of the most popular love songs of the 20th-century. Also, Kapoor and Dixit became one of the most popular on-screen couples of Bollywood.
Synopsis
Beta is the story of Raju (Anil Kapoor), the only child of a widowed multi-millionaire father who can provide his son with anything he wants except Raju's only desire—a mother's love. Raju's father believes he can please his son by marrying Laxmi (Aruna Irani), thinking that she will care for Raju as her natural son. Raju becomes devoted to his stepmother, does whatever she asks of him; she convinces her husband that Raju should remain naïve and uneducated otherwise he would work for others rather than be self-employed. Raju grows older his step-mother increasingly isolates his father from the family, is considered mentally incompetent and eventually locked within a room of the family home.Actors

Rana Mahendra Pratap Garewal (Mukesh Khanna) is a wealthy businessman along with his brother Vishwa (Dalip Tahil). They are good friends with Brijnath (Birju) (Paresh Rawal) who is initially very rich but loses all his wealth in a fire in his factory. The Garewal brothers had initially proposed the marriage of Rana's younger sister Madhu (Madhuri Dixit) and Brijnath's younger brother Raja (Sanjay Kapoor) (both are young; their brothers are adults). They break the marriage off. Shocked and saddened at the rejection by his best friends, Birju goes mad and gets electrocuted by accident. Raja then stays in the city outskirts with his brother taking care of him by doing petty jobs.

Ranjit Rai (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) and Harbanslal (Dalip Tahil) are two wealthy business magnates who despise the poor. Thus, they decide their children, Ajay (Ajay Devgan) and Madhu (Juhi Chawla), will marry wealthy spouses. Vishwa (Surya) and Nilani (Preetha) fall in love, her mother doesn't approve, but goes along with it. Complications arise when Surya's character exhibits "fashion" photos he's taken of Preetha, which further upsets Preetha's mother. Then it comes to light that Surya's father (Prakash Raj) had an affair, and things take a dramatic, tragic turn for the lovers. In the end, both families arrive at airport to prevent Preetha from boarding flight but to their bad luck they could not stop it. Preetha commits suicide by swallowing poison from her ring and Surya who gets hit by a wall turns into mentally challenged with behaviour of a child.
